A successful family vacation draws to a close with a trip through the great Smokey Mountains. (Their beauty is frustratingly difficult to capture from a fast moving vehicle.)

Rainy, empty road with trees and mountains in the foggy distance

Let the winds awake,
let the branches rattle and shake In the light that remakes
all that water has worn away

Sun dapples through the trees onto a rushing brook with stony bottom

Sure, your hotel is famous but is it “contains a scale model of itself” famous? (Grove Park Inn, Asheville)

Enjoying some breathtaking views of the great Smokey Mountains. My phone says we’ve hiked 25 floors in the last hour.

Discovering new sights in downtown Knoxville, TN. Really a beautiful city.

One of my favorite pieces from this year’s student exhibition at the DIA. I laughed embarrassingly hard when we turned the corner and saw it.

The thing about cultivating gratitude is it doesn’t only come from commemorating or reliving happy times. In my experience, it comes from sitting with your worst moments and practicing how to reframe that ugliness into a lesson you can learn from.

Victoria Song’s article mirrors my own concerns with Apple’s new Journal app. I plan to stick with my current habit and app. Journaling is my time and intensely personal. AI and algorithms have no seat at that table as I’m chasing personal reflection, not features.

Having passed the 150 mark, I can definitively say that what’s made the biggest difference is a daily reminder that I can tap and take immediate action on. As much as I prefer pen and paper journaling, it never stuck like this.

The beautiful evening turned a short neighborhood walk into a four mile hike.

Memorial Day weekend was full of much-needed time reconnecting to nature with family and friends. I welcome the soreness from all the hiking and kayaking.

My grandmother passed away today. Always passionate about music, she left this world surrounded by family who were singing to comfort her. A lovingly beautiful end.

Seasons are still a thrilling novelty for me. Several months ago I was taking photos of ice covering this same tree that is now fullly blooming in the afternoon sun.

I must replenish the coffee stores, lest mine attention turn fallow in the meetings upon this morn!

A friend asked me for YouTube channel recommendations and my entire list was people who build and create things. I’m far more interested in people who make shit than talk it.

This photo is a stand-in for an insightfully funny, but relatable, post about how my kid learning to drive is great but also filling me with a parental terror I thought I’d managed within myself but obviously haven’t.
