Winter’s chill is ever so slowly waning from the air as the melting snows begin to water the plants they once covered.

We stopped so the train could pass which began a dance over the next several miles. First it went over us, and then we went over it, and finally we traveled side by side, through hills and trees, until our paths diverged.

This morning I ground my coffee at the wrong setting and now it won’t properly brew in my drip machine.😨 Thankfully, the grind will work with a pour-over so I don’t have to create a GoFundMe for this trying time.

Congratulations to some dear friends on the healthy birth of their first son. (Especially the enduring 40+ hours of labor part!)

We set out
and bear witness to a moment.
Silent as the scene before us.

Multiple walks through the trees, feeling thankful to enjoy the snow again. The light is brighter, the world is quieter, and hot drinks are more enjoyable when you come back inside to warm up.

It finally started acting like a proper January! The kid and I filled the yard and front windows with snowmen. ⛄️

Finished watching Wednesday and, while we couldn’t help comparing it to the Addams Family movies, the whole family really enjoyed it. Looking forward to season two.

Instead of my alarm clock, I woke up to a fraud alert. I hope some of the thief’s $80 sushi was spoiled. 😡

Visited the Museum of Contemporary Design in downtown Detroit. The highlight was the work of Jason Revok. He uses custom tools to create works with his entire body that look mechanical at first glance but have a wonderful human quality.

The irony of parenthood is, when your kids are young, you’d love nothing better than a date night away from them. However, once they’re old enough for sleepovers, you wish they were hanging out with you.

🤺 My first fencing bouts of the new year and I won more than I lost. My favorite opponent is still kicking my butt though. She seems to see my every weakness.

Late this afternoon, the sun made its first appearance after two solid days of cold, foggy rain that should have been snow. As soon as my eyes spotted the warm colors, my body quite literally rushed me out the door and into the light.

It was a short but satisfying walk.

Litany Against Resolutions

I must not make New Year’s resolutions.

Resolutions are the mind-killer.

Resolutions are the little-deaths that bring total obliteration.

I will face my year’s end.

I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

And when it has gone past, I will …

Enjoyed the temporary “heatwave” with a wonderful dinner at Lumen in downtown Detroit. (Hard to believe it was 2° and snowing just a few days ago.)

My wife discovered that we have a Yemenis coffee shop just up the street from us so we visited this morning. Everyone loved what they ordered and my Turkish coffee was just incredible. I can’t wait to try all of their other specialties.

🤺 I learned a lot in fencing tonight. (Learned a lot is code for, I got my butt kicked in many new and exciting ways.)
